1904: THE GREAT FIRE OF TORONTO
Since 1834, Toronto has experienced two major fires. The fire did not just burn one or two houses, but a few blocks of structures, causing hundreds of damaged houses and thousands of displaced people. The first great fire happened in 1849. Due to the lack of recorded information about this fire, the only major impact was the creation of the city’s fire fighting system. The second great fire happened on April 19, 1904. A scarf factory located in a commercial and industrial area in downtown Toronto caught fire. In combination with the 48 km/h winds, the fire spread into the surrounding areas without control. In the early 1900s, the car had been invented; however, the technology was not yet fully developed or available. Thus, most fire trucks were carriages. The fire destroyed 104 houses, closed down 125 shops or factories, and caused 5,000 people to lose their jobs. The image below is a fire insurance map that highlights the extent of the fire's damage, and photoes showed the changes before fire and after fire Bay street looking north, the red arrow from south to north.

The Great Fire had a signficant impact on both the infrastructure and economy of Toronto. In regard to infrastructure, significant land use regulations were implemented by the city government after the fire. Such regulations included the separation of conflicting land uses, building material requirements, and increased space required between buildings. In regared to the economy, many of the companies that were affected by the fire were young and, thus, struggled to recover lost investments. As a result, 5,000 workers lost their jobs.
