Modern-day Toronto is composed of nearly 630 square kilometers, or 243 square miles (Statistics Canada 2012). This land area is home to approximately 2.8 million residents, who contribute to Toronto’s diverse and vibrant community (City of Toronto 2015). The city has twelve key sectors that drive its economy, including food processing, aerospace/MRO, automotive, and clean energy and environment (Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance 2011). Particularly notable sectors of Toronto’s economy include technology and financial services. In fact, “Toronto is Canada’s financial and business capital” (City of Toronto 2015).

ABOUT TORONTO
ABOUT THE SITE

This webpage was created as a requirement of PLAN7002: Structures & Dynamics of Human Settlements taught by Professor Carla Chifos at the University of Cincinnati. The primary purpose of the site is to determine the most critical points of Toronto's history. Essentially, what has contributed to the evolution of Toronto, and how have these moments in history affected the city spatially?

The city of Toronto was assigned as it has been repeatedly listed as one of the world's most liveable cities. To explore our analysis of Toronto, which includes its history, the critical shifts of its evolution, and primary sectors of its development, take a look at the tabs near the top of the page. Moreover, links exist throughout the page, in the form of both arrows and in-text links (red, bold text). These links will allow you to navigate between relevant pages, as well as between critical shifts and analyses

The development of Toronto’s social and economic diversity was most certainly enabled and enhanced by the progression of the city’s history. Various critical points in Toronto’s history, including the Great Fire of Toronto, the establishment of the Toronto Transportation Commission, the fall of the Toronto Stock Exchange, the construction of the CN Tower, the Immigration Act of 1976, and the amalgamation of metropolitan Toronto, were the primary factors inducing such progress. Each had a significant impact on how the physical and social elements of the city were transformed.

Specifically, these critical points, and their overall impact on the city of Toronto, have influenced and have been further influenced by the amalgamation of metropolitan Toronto. This consolidation of resources and services has increased efficiency and has likely contributed to the recognition of Toronto as one of the world's most livable cities. These critical points, as well as Toronto's livablity are elaborated in the "Critical Shifts" tab at the top of the page.
